2003 Update Notes

Research is an ongoing process and I always intended to attempt to put events discussed in this dissertation into their context with more research. The early stages of such research were presented in a paper in 2003. (See 'Seventeenth Century Parish Registers as Sources' for more information.)

As a result of this later research, I am now less convinced that starvation was actually a factor in the rise in burials in 1649. I still believe that there was some degree of suffering caused by food shortages in the period, especially for those in the lower classes, but actual deaths from starvation seem unlikely.

The subject was to be revisited within my PhD research and I am hopeful that I will be able to draw somewhat firmer conclusions as that research is completed.
